Sheffield took a gold award in this year's Britain in Bloom Awards that were held in Chester recently. Sheffield was representing the entire region and also took four more awards from the Royal Horticultural Society in what proved to be a fantastic night for Sheffield.

The judges noted that the city featured excellent permanent landscaping, and they recognised the unique tree-planting programme, the Botanical Gardens and the Peace Gardens and a variety of other projects.

The Environmental Quality Award was given to the Council's work in its community education service by Street Force and the City Centre Ambassadors, whilst the Stan and Mary floral statues outside of the Town Hall were named as the Best Local Authority Floral Display Award.

Councillor Sylvia Dunkley, the Council’s Cabinet member for Culture, Leisure and Streetscene stated "We were absolutely delighted to win Gold this year against some really tough opposition. The city’s success was certainly helped by a great deal of hard work by many organisations and individuals that have supported the Council in making our city so attractive. Stan and Mary are very special symbols of Sheffield’s heritage and it was great to see them recognised by the Royal Horticultural Society with this special award."
