Skilled carvers work devotedly sculpting each individual rocking horse with a mallet and chisel. Detailed features such as facial expressions and of bone and muscle, which are detailed by hand, all add to the individual character and feel of each horse. All our painted horses are then given three or four coats of warm gesso, a mixture of rabbit skin glue and gilder’s whiting. This technique protects the wood and makes it become slightly flexible, allowing for the natural movement of the wood.
A skilled team of artists then take charge of the rocking horse. They will then hand paint the rocking horse, skilfully applying paint in subtle layers. Shades, texture and dapple are worked gently into the rocking horse body to accentuate the natural curves and muscles. This ensures that every rocking horse is unique.
