Members of the public in Sheffield were recently given a rare opportunity; the chance to experience life as a blind person. A unique event took place in the city centre that was aimed at highlighting National Guide Dog Week. Those who volunteered were taken through a series of obstacles that were laid out in such a way as to represent every day hazards faced by partially sighted and blind people. These included dealing with a cluttered high street, a crowded shop and a busy railway station.
The aim of the exercise was to give people a greater understanding of the difficulties faced
by people who cannot see and all more empathy with the partially sighted. It also highlighted how people using a cane or guide
dog often need an extra helping hand. Members of the Guide Dogs team handed out DVDs and leaflets describing guiding techniques. The the Guide Dogs' demonstration team were also on hand to provide a stunning display int he Fargate and Barker's Pool area.
