Graves Art Gallery

The Graves Art Gallery can be found in the centre of Sheffield located just above the Central Library and close to the Millennium Galleries. On permanent display are items from Sheffield's collection of 19th and 20th century British and European Art alongside a varied and exciting range of temporary exhibitions.

The collection of British and European Art demonstrates the development of Modern Art. All of the main trends and movements are demonstrated by examples from world renowned artists, such as Pablo Picasso, Pierre Bonnard, Sir Stanley Spencer and Helen Chadwick.

The Graves Art Gallery first opened in 1934 with the help of a local business man John George Graves, a pioneer in the world of mail order. Graves was an avid art collector himself, and his personal collection that featured many significant and wonderful pieces where presented to the city for display at the Graves Art Gallery.

The Graves Art Gallery has consistantly provided a variety of temporary displays alongside the established, permanent displays. This decision was taken by the first Director of the gallery John Rothenstein, who was later known as the Director of the Tate Gallery.

2001 saw a complete renovation of the Graves Art Gallery to restore the galleries to their former glory. The gallery’s boast an exquisite 1930s feel that is simply the perfect setting for both the permanent and temporary displays.
